  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar (for buttercream filling)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, then stir in vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add dry mixture alternately with milk until just combined; do not overmix.
  6. Scoop tablespoon-sized amounts of batter onto prepared sheets, spacing them evenly.
  7. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until cakes spring back when touched. Cool on wire racks.
  8. For the filling, whip together softened butter, powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth.
  9. Assemble by piping or spreading filling onto half of the cooled cakes, topping with the other half.
