Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water (110°F)
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 large eggs
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil
  • Optional: Poppy seeds or sesame seeds for topping

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast by combining warm water and sugar in a bowl. Sprinkle yeast on top and let it sit until frothy (5-10 minutes).
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Add eggs and oil to the yeast mixture, then gradually mix in the dry ingredients until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap or a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm spot for about 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough, divide it into three strands, and braid them together.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the braided challah on a parchment-lined baking sheet, brush with beaten egg for glaze, and sprinkle seeds if desired.
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
