  • 1 head green cabbage
  • 1 lb lean ground beef (or turkey)
  • 1 cup uncooked long-grain rice
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 28 oz crushed tomatoes (canned)
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Blanch cabbage leaves in boiling water for 3–5 minutes until soft.
  2. In a bowl, mix ground beef, rice, onion, garlic, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper until well combined.
  3. Place about ¼ cup filling in each cabbage leaf; roll tightly.
  4. In a saucepan, combine crushed tomatoes, sugar, lemon juice, salt, and pepper; simmer for 10 minutes.
  5. Spread some sauce in a baking dish; arrange cabbage rolls seam-side down and pour remaining sauce over them; cover with foil.
  6. Bake at 350°F for 45 minutes covered; uncover and bake an additional 15 minutes.
