This classic Southern comfort food is perfect for family dinners or casual gatherings, delivering rich flavors and heartwarming memories in every bite.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb beef round steak
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (divided)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 tsp seasoned salt
  • 1 cup vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Tenderize the beef round steak to about half an inch thick using a meat mallet.
  2. Set up three shallow dishes: one with 3/4 cup flour mixed with seasoned salt and garlic powder, one with beaten eggs and milk, and another with the remaining 1/4 cup plain flour.
  3. Bread the steak by first coating it in plain flour, then dipping it into the egg mixture, and finally pressing it into the seasoned flour.
  4. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat vegetable oil until shimmering.
  5. Fry each breaded steak for about 3-4 minutes per side until golden brown.
  6. Remove steaks, drain excess oil, leaving about 1-2 tablespoons in the pan. Add butter until melted, then whisk in remaining flour to create a roux before slowly adding chicken broth until thickened.
